What's your source? And what do you mean (I got an email before I got a phone)? I can tell you that most school districts give you a email once your into the system…. are you just basing this of yourself?
SMS
Authentication apps like Google Authenticate
People say that “kids don't have phones” when that's untrue. Many kids get phones around the age of 8-12, and Scratch's target age is 8-16. 70% of kids have phones by age 11, and 80% of kids have phones by age 12, so most people using Scratch can use SMS.
Email is the same as SMS, most people have one by the time they get a phone (I actually got an email before I got a phone).
Authentication apps like Google Authenticate are usually secure, but for those who are skeptical, that's why we have email/SMS.
